LAST LONGER- PART 1

Yumei was sitting on her bean bag chair with her left arm around her bent legs and her head rested uncomfortably on the window sill. In her right hand was a pink cordless phone, which seemed to emit some sort of manly melodic noise. It was Yumei's best friend, Gong Yoo on the other line, singing something to lull her to sleep.

"Nae ape soso oreum gateun mogsoriro
(Nabogo) Wae ajik innyago hwareul naeneun no
Kkeutnan gol naman moreugo inneun gorago
Do chagapge ddo dashi nareul borigo gajima

(Haru iteulman jinado noui binjariga nomu keunde)
Dashi nowa yejoneuro doragago shipeun nae maeumeul non moreugenni?
(Hanasshik doronae boado naui sarangi nomu manheunde)
Byonhaeganeun ni moseube biwojineun gaseumeul ottohke gyondirago hae"

Yumei shut her eyes, singing mutely to Gong Yoo while swaying from left to right. "Yaah," she whispered, "you have an amazing singing voice, do you know that? You're almost as good as Se7en himself."

Gong Yoo stopped singing immediately. "Yumei ah, are you there?" he chuckled. "What happened to you, did a ghost possess you? Aish, you should really find a new way to fight your insomnia."

The female adult puckered her lips, annoyed, and laid back on her bean bag chair. "Yah, Gong Yoo ya, do you think you're funny? Aish, how petty and unappreciative. I'm praising you and- ..!"

"Ah, ah, ah, I got it. Now, please go to sleep.."

"Mm," Yumei nodded to herself and slipped into her bed. "By the way, do you think tomorrow will be- ..?"

"Yes, okay, go to sleep, bye," and he hung up before Yumei could even finish her question or bade him goodnight.

Yumei sighed loudly, trying so hard to fall asleep. She had never been so nervous in her whole life.. at least not that she could remember any similar instance. It hadn't even been that bad when she had gotten the news that day.

--
"Yumei, my dork!" she heard Gong Yoo, who had come over to her house to repair her television that day, calling her playfully in a sing-song tone. "Have you been checking up on Se7en's schedule? I heard he's coming here, to Malaysia."
--

She had run out of the bathroom in twirls, a toothbrush still held in her hand and her mouth full of toothpaste as she gave a muffled yell of "WHAT?!". Gong Yoo had then sworn that he had never seen her eyes so wide before and after a slap on the head, he offered to get her to the concert. The toothbrush was left abandoned on the floor as Yumei leapt over to hug her best friend.

Se7en, a famous male Korean singer, had been Yumei's idol and ideal dream guy since she had heard his pleasant voice and saw his unmistakably unique dance moves. When he debuted in the United States, Yumei thought that maybe it would take another lifetime before Se7en would debut in her home country, Malaysia, but apparently she was wrong. Although she had hoped for the celebrity to hold a concert here, the piece of good news still came to her as a huge surprise.

She, with the help of Gong Yoo, did some fund-raising so as to be able to attend the concert, and in less than three weeks they earned enough to get themselves two tickets to mentioned concert. Then they begged their friend, who had relations to the people who handled the backstage passes, professionally to get them the two free passes and a tiny 'date' with the star.

It had been about fourteen days ago when she received the call and free backstage passes, yet the apprehensiveness that she seemed to have controlled over the past two weeks seemed to have increased. Tonight, she was to suffer insomnia out of anxiety and fear of losing backstage entry.

She turned to her side. If she really met Se7en, how was she supposed to introduce herself and Gong Yoo? Were they supposed to shake hands? ... Should she pretend that Gong Yoo was her boyfriend so that Se7en would get jealous. She shook her head with a soft laugh. Aish, if I do that, Se7en won't want to get close to me, she mused.

She turned to the other side and shut her eyes. Should she bring her camera? Is it okay to take her own pictures? She sat up on her bed. "Ah, this is so hard! ... What do I wear?!" she looked around her room in alarm. There was the outfit she had gotten ready two weeks ago on the foot of her bed. At the doors of her wardrobe hung the outfit she had planned to wear a week ago. And on the chair was the outfit she prepared three days ago. She grunted to herself.

*

I got what you want
Got what you need
So baby, come over here
Meet me in the back of the club-

"Hello?" she murmured.

Come over here
Start looking for me
now that you want me
So, baby just come over here
My name is Se7en
and this is my year

"Aish.." she muttered as she rubbed the sleepiness off her eyes, realising that she hadn't picked up her ringing phone at all. She grabbed her mobile phone and picked up the call. "What?" she asked groggily.

"Yah, Yumei ah! Don't tell me you've just woken up? Do you know what time it is? It's almost four in the afternoon. Yah, wake up already! What time did you sleep last night?"

Yumei pouted. "At three in the morning."

...

"I couldn't make up my mind on what to wear," she explained. "So, I prepared a whole new outfit. By the way, did you say four in the afternoon? ... Omo!" she screamed and threw the phone onto her bed as she hurried to the bathroom.

*

When Yumei reached the place, she found Gong Yoo talking to himself. "Ah, seriously, why are girls always late? Why is it so hard to dress? ... It's not like she dresses up that nicely to meet me."

"Yah," she hit his head from behind him. "What are you complaining about?"

"Yah, don't do- .." Gong Yoo had turned around to face Yumei then completely startled by the way she looked, was cut off mid-sentence by an appaling moment. "What is this?" he said, apparently amused. "You look really funny, do you know that?"

Yumei tilted her head. "Well, it's presentable..."

"Aish," he shook his head with a smile. "So that ghost is still possessing you, then? Hurry up, we're gonna be late for the concert!" He grabbed her by the wrist and brought her into his car.

*

It was hard to not think about the much awaited backstage moment during the concert. Yumei was watching and singing to Se7en in awe, but all she could think of was the different possible scenarios later backstage. She kept shaking her head and muttering "impossible, impossible.." but what if...?

"Thank you, everyone!" Se7en's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. "I'm so sorry I didn't come here earlier.. look at you lot! Uwah," he grinned adorably. "Thank you, thank you for supporting me and please carry on doing so. Yah, my dear fans, do any of you have any affairs?" he paused for a moment while the crowd screamed 'No'. "Seriously?"

And again, the fans denied having any affairs. Se7en, being the dork he was, grinned even wider at this. "Yeah, that's right. "Ahh, there's so much I want to say to you.. but I have something to attend to, don't I? Take care!" and he exited the stage, completely petrifying Yumei.

"Hey, you ready?"

Yumei turned around. It was Gong Yoo, standing right beside her with an encouraging look plastered on his face. Yumei had to smile, she was not used to being shy or nervous in front of Gong Yoo. But.. She sighed as they headed backstage. Gong Yoo will see a totally different side of me when I'm dead stunned in front of Se7en.

When they finally reached behind the stage, they were ushered to a narrow hall. They stopped in front of a door with a star with seven ends imprinted on it. Gong Yoo knocked twice. The doorknob turned. The door slowly opened. The suite life of a star was revealed.

The room was too grand to be considered a backstage room. The walls were large mirrors adjoined to each other and somewhere at the corner was a bathroom. In another corner settled a big, fluffy round couch and all around the room were fish tanks, a wardrobe, a television, a computer and some other things Yumei couldn't name.

"Well, hi."

Yumei stood there, petrified for the second time that day. Se7en.. her favourite singer.. had spoken to her! Oh no... what should I say? Gong Yoo nudged her at the shoulder. "YAH, what's wrong with you?!" she shouted at her companion, forgetting completely that Se7en was right in front of her.

Gong Yoo was smirking evilly. "Ah, so the real Yumei is back then. How's the ghost doing?"

"Aish, how petty," she hit his head playfully. "The only ghost here is Gong Yoo!"

"Yah, yah, am I not your oppa?"

She scrunched up her nose. "It's just a matter of how many years.. tsch, you say that like you're really old. Yah, are you my brother? You're more like a girlfriend than an oppa.."

"What?!" he snapped. "Yah, I dare you to say that again!"

Se7en cleared his throat, bringing Yumei back to reality where she couldn't lift Gong Yoo and fold him into a thousand pieces then throw him inside a blender to mix him with garlic, oil and kimchi...

"Is this what you bribed us for?" the twenty-three year old said annoyingly. "I heard what you did.. yah, do you think this is fair? There are so many other fans who deserve the backstage passes.. but the ones who get it are a couple of people who prefer to spend the time quarelling. Aish..."

"Yah, oppa," Yumei spoke up. "How can you judge people like that? And anyway, don't you know what that sort of speech can do to your image? Aish, seriously.. we worked hard to get the tickets and passes. We didn't bribe, just so you know. Your concert's not worth bribing..."

Se7en grinned stupidly. "How can I trust the two of you? Give me your identification cards.." he handed out a hand.

"Yah, what for?"

Se7en widened his eyes. "Convenience. I'd better let the police arrest you before this gets leaked, don't you think so?" Totally agitated, Yumei didn't waste any effort to defy him as the star took a picture of her with his phone. He nodded and let go of her. "Thanks," he winked.

"... What was that?" Yumei murmured to herself.

The singer faced them after keeping his phone. "Cha, don't worry now. That was just a way to get you to talk."

"What?"

"Yah, aren't you a fan? Er.."

"Yumei," she told him indifferently.

"Yah, Yumei ya, aren't you a fan? Fans usually want to go backstage and take a picture."

Both Yumei and Gong Yoo raised their eyebrows.

Se7en hopped onto the round couch. "Fans who meet me backstage take their own pictures with their own cameras and whatnot. One minute, they're all over me. The next, they totally forget about me. Like, what's so special about meeting Se7en? He's just another star. I just don't want anymore of that."

Yumei sat beside him on the couch, feeling quite sympathetic for the young man. "So, doing something that others might hate you for and taking a picture with your own phone helps?"

He smiled. "Yeah, sort of.."

"Why does it have to be like that?"

He flipped his hair naturally. "When you're a celebrity, doesn't matter if you're used to it or not, you'd feel petrified and anxious if you're going to meet a fan backstage. It's the moment when you have to act like yourself and not the celebrity that the media knows. Being yourself, taking a picture as yourself.. it's much more memorable."

"So, accusing us of bribing your people and taking a picture against Yumei's will is what a celebrity should do?" Gong Yoo butted in.

Se7en turned to face him. "Yah, haven't you heard? A candid picture is the real picture.. it lasts longer."

PART 2

Yumei felt her lips tremble. Did he really say what he did.. or was she just thinking too much? Feeling totally uncertain, Yumei did what she always did whenever the infamous paralytic feeling struck her: she pinched her best friend's sleeve and dragged him over to the side, way away from the celebrity's earshot.

"I think he reads people's minds," she whispered in Gong Yoo's ear, not realising there was the absence of sense to her statement. "I remember myself saying that sometime ago..." She bit her lower lip.

Just as Gong Yoo rolled his eyes, Se7en glanced over at the pair then set his eyes on Yumei, paralysing her for a split second. "Come on," he beckoned at the couch. "I haven't lead a normal life in a long time."

Gong Yoo blinked. Se7en grinned. Then, Yumei finally softened.

*

It was almost 2 in the morning when Yumei finally dropped lazily onto her bed with a foolscap pad and pen in hand. She took a deep breath and glanced over at the phone, thought of calling her best friend, then thought better of it.

She began fumbling to get a piece of paper to scribble on, simply because she couldn't sleep as she was much too excited about what had happened less than an hour ago. Her lips curved into a small smile and she began writing:

Dear paper,
tonight.. or rather, last night, was by far one of the best nights ever.
I met Se7en, finally!, and it was a pleasant, if not odd, experience. He turns out to be much nicer than I imagine him to be.. and he seems to be craving to be a kid again. It's cute, and so not manly. ^lol^
Well, he's very soft-spoken and sometimes, he cannot even find the right words to say! Oh, Choi DORK Wook :D

We took tons of pictures.. it's a habit of his. He says pictures last longer.
I'm beginning to think so too.
Apart from the pictures, he has promised to KEEP IN TOUCH!

Oh, and of course this is all thanks to Gong Yoo.
.. And speaking of him, he was acting a little weird last night...
Eheh, maybe guys have mood swings too ^lol^
OK here ends my scribbling ~

And after another smile, Yumei fell clumsily to sleep.

*THREE WEEKS LATER*

"What do you mean he's been acting weird?" the voice on the other line asked curiously.

"I don't know, it just feels really weird. He doesn't speak to me about... well, anything! Say, I have a question.. he just says 'OK.' Besides that, everytime I ask him out, he tells me he's too busy and excuses himself. I mean, I don't mind if he really is busy all the time but when I ask his parents where he is, they say he's right in front of them, watching the television!" she explained it all in one breath.

There was a long pause before the other replied. "I guess he just doesn't want to be bothered.. Yumei ah, I really wish I could hang around the phone with you but the fanmeeting just started and I have to go now. So sorry!”

"It’s okay, oppa,” she assured him. “I’m just glad you took the time to even call me!”

“Of course I would. Oh, and I am finally having a break this weekend, at Jeju Island. I’ve got some spare air tickets, and I’m inviting you. Is that okay?”

“Totally!” she instantly answered. “I need a break too, I think I’ve worked too hard this year!”

“Yes, you have, my little Yumei,” he teased. “If only I could work as hard as you do!” he squealed playfully, giving Yumei a few giggles and smiles, then added, “There’s a wonderful villa there. You’ll love it.”

“Of course I will, but I'll be there only for a while. My parents would kill me if they knew I was going to a MAN’S VILLA IN ANOTHER COUNTRY,” she told him, the smile never fading off her lips. “Take care, okay, oppa!”

"Right, you take care too, and don't worry too much. I'm sure he'll explain it all to you in good time. Just wait and see! OK?” When he said this, the smile did leave her lips at last, and Yumei found herself mum. “Yumei ya, annyeong!” came his happy farewell, just a few nanoseconds before he hung up the phone.

The thoughts came flooding back. When Se7en oppa was not around to cheer her up, Yumei would always stop to think again of the things that bothered her. There was just no way out, not yet, not now. She had to go through it all, and simply wait for it to get better. . .

Yumei sighed, exhausted of all the confusion. Hadn’t eight years of friendship been enough to let her understand her best friend’s sudden change in behavior? Then, why did she feel as though Gong Yoo was a stranger whose actions and words she was still trying to comprehend?

Instantly, she picked up the receiver and dialed his phone number. The rings went on and on and on... were they ever going to stop abruptly and allow her to hear the voice she terribly missed? If they were, what was she going to say, and what would be his answers? If they weren’t, was she supposed to ask why he hadn’t picked up the call the next time they met?

On the twentieth ring, the call was finally picked up. There was no voice at the other line. There wasn’t the usual ‘Hello, who is it, do I know you, are you my favorite stalker?’. All she heard was the violent motor of a fan. A few moments passed, and Yumei, realising her phone number would appear on Gong Yoo’s Caller ID as ‘--PRIVATE--‘, gently placed the receiver back where it belonged.

That had been the night the flower of their friendship started to walt. The night the motor of their time together began to jam. The night their photo started to fade away. That night, Yumei had to cry herself to sleep.

When Yumei awoke the next morning, she received a text-message from Gong Yoo, who told her to meet him at their favorite cafe. As he had put it, it was essential for them to catch up on things.

She took her time to get ready, and when she reached the cafe half an hour later than promised, she simply shrugged it off when her friend had mentioned it to her.

“How have you been?” he asked after 20 odd minutes of awkward silence. “I haven’t heard from you for quite a while.”

Yumei forced a smile. “Oh, just the same. The only difference in my life now is that I have Se7en oppa to guide me through,” she told him, then added somewhat weirdly, “too.”

Gong Yoo gave a short nod.

“How about you?”

“Been pretty busy. My dad’s business is really kicking off, and I’ve got to help him before I go for my training,” he said, then gave a smile.

While a part of her could see the hesitance in the smile, Yumei couldn’t help wondering if she could not differ a fake smile from a real one of her own best friend anymore.

“I haven’t been able to spend as much itme with you due to the tire and everything,” he explained.

“OK,” she simply said, then took another long sip of her ice blended coffee. “Hm,” she said in disapproval. “It doesn’t taste as good as it was before.”

Gong Yoo took a gulp from his own drink, then grimaced. “Yeah, it’s changed.”

Yumei leaned back in her chair and shifted her gaze. That isn’t the only thing that’s changed... “Look, I,” she started just as the man sitting across her said the same thing. She sighed. “You first.”

He took a long look at her before saying, “I have to go.” Without further ado, he stood up and headed towards the doors. Yumei followed behind, not caring to finish her drink or leave a tip, like she had always done, on the table. She could see Gong Yoo walking numerous steps ahead of her, his pace slowing down by the second.

All of a sudden, he stopped walking and turned around to face her instead. Yumei stopped, too, and they stayed like that for a minute, until the male adult took a few steps towards her.

"You haven't fallen for him, have you? ... You don't treat Se7en as someone more than just your favourite celebrity, do you?" he suddenly asked her, his squinted eyes searching hers for an honest answer.

Yumei's eyes widened. What did Gong Yoo care if she did treat Choi Dongwook as someone far more special than her favourite artiste, Se7en? She was allowed to fall for him anyways.. weren't they more than just friends now? An alien feeling started engulfing her insides, causing her to shout, "It's none of your business!" in her old friend's face.

A different kind of look soon replaced his anger-filled countenance a minute ago, when he seemed much stronger. It was a mere look of disappointment; a look Yumei had not expected or wanted her friend to give. She looked away from him and as soon as she did, he grasped her hand by the wrist.

She turned to face him again. His mouth was slightly open, looking as though he wanted to say something but was too distracted to do so, and he was just staring straight at her, a visible mist of longing enveloping his eyes. Then he exhaled a long sigh - probably the longest one she had ever heard come from him - and let go of her wrist, walking away slowly, leaving her confused as she watched him desert her.

*

"So, what was he thinking?" Yumei pressed again, observing Se7en frying pancakes uncomfortably.

"I don't know," he murmured distractedly, eyes fixed on the pancakes. "Do you want to eat these?" he asked, motioning to the seven-shaped pancakes he had made.

"I don't care about your stupid, dorky pancakes right now! I want to know what he was thinking- ..!"

"Your loss," Se7en sneered. "That guy's too weird to understand so stop pushing me, will you?"

The two of them were in the kitchen - or rather, Se7en's so-called sanctuary - where Yumei had spent the whole morning shuffling her feet in and where she was hit by inspiration the moment Se7en entered the kitchen an hour ago. She had just finished telling the other what had happened the other day at the street with Gong Yoo after realising the latter and the artiste were both men. Se7en would have been able to understand why Gong Yoo bombarded her with questions she didn't want to answer and why he had put on that look as he stared at her. She thought it was a smart decision, but not only after Se7en shrugged did she regret confiding in him.

"Ah, why?" she whined.

Se7en shook his head with a small chuckle. "How do you expect me to know what's on his mind?"

Yumei bit her lower lip. "Well, I kind of always thought you could read minds," she mumbled audibly and received a louder much ridiculous chuckle from the pancake-fryer. "Anyway, you're a guy and he's a guy so you should know his intentions!"

He turned off the fire and turned around to face her. "That's an awful assumption. I don't understand why he did that. At all."

Yumei sighed. "Well, let's say you did that to a girl you've known for a long, long time."

"Okay.."

"Why did you do it?"

"Because I've fallen for her."

... "What?"

"And I'm jealous and afraid of her liking another man, but at the same time afraid that she would not be happy if I was in the way because then she wouldn't be happy," Se7en finished and looked up at Yumei, who was now staring at him, flabbergasted, assuring her of what he said with a satisfied, truthful smile. "Pancakes?"
